Cancer stem cells are the true cause of cancer?
Cancer stem cells was first postulated 100 years ago. Biologist Beard called then called germ cells that produce cancer cells in 1902-1906 then in 1994-97 finally did researchers first isolated the cells mother to cancer, leukemia. Since then, the cancer stem cells have been found in several cancers including breast, colon, pancreas, myeloma, and the brain. Leading research centers for the work of cancer stem cells are Johns Hopkins, Stanford and U of Michigan. There are some clinical trials before starting to target cancer stem cells. So what is a cancer stem cell? which is the cell that produces the reality of the cells cancer. Stem cells divide into more stem cells and progenitor cells that will become more mature cells. So the cancer stem cell is reproduce and more cancer cells. Current treatments do not kill cancer stem cells, so then they can produce more cancer cells. If you can kill all cancer stem cells, cancer can be cured. T
Yes, indeed, that has recently resurfaced in cancer research. Some people are beginning to think that cancer relapse may in fact be mainly due to cancer stem cell remains in the body (traditional chemotherapy is not very discriminating and kill at least partially ...). But I had yet heard about stem cell targeted agents. I will look into this. Sounds interesting.
